The X-Men are an extraordinary piece of culture. They captivated the 1990s and decades prior with comic book stories rooted in reality, until they subtly faded to the background in the 2010s. Thankfully we have had classic films like Logan and the Deadpool films to tied us over.
Now, they’re back with X-Men ‘97, a thoroughly dramatic, socio-political, anime-inspired, and gritty series. Episode five of the series is already receiving wide praise as one of the year’s best television episodes.
X-Men was always a story of a group of people oppressed systemically fighting against the oppressor, as well as classic superhero themes like altruism. X-Men ‘97 succeeds in delivering parallels to our systemic realities, just as the X-Men have throughout time. This is why X-Men is important.
When Bulletproof Soul was founded in 2021, the vision was to be the X-Men of entertainment. Artistry and activism have always been hand in hand. Nothing lasts forever. It’s about what that piece of culture does in the moment, and the lasting impact we can have on the world.
